Company and Credit Information

What is Due Diligence?

In the most general sense, due diligence is an investigation into a company's worthiness for receiving credit and/or co-operation.

Who Needs Due Diligence?

You should be conducting the following basic checks on your Chinese partner if they are fulfilling any of the following roles:

  • Potential Joint Venture Partner
  • Sales Agent/ Distributor
  • Contract Manufacturer
  • Other Suppliers

Too many foreign companies have rushed into agreements with trade partners only to encounter substantial unforeseen problems. The mistakes would have almost certainly been avoided had they done the necessary due diligence to the same standards that they would have done in the West. An often-quoted piece of advice about doing business in China is, "Do your due diligence - twice." Compared to other countries and because of the lack of transparency, due diligence in China requires a hands-on approach that is more in-depth than simply looking at a company's books.
