Dali is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Yunnan. Attractions include: Er-Hai Lake, Ancient architecture, Cang Mountain and Xizhou village. Zhaotong prefecture city has a population of 4.7 million. The leading sector is the Chemical sector.

Pu’er prefecture city is famous for its tea. Subtropical climate with no frost during the year. Leading sectors consist of food manufacturing (tea and coffee) and consumer goods manufacturing (forest products such as eucalyptus oil and raw lacquer).

Wenshan is a city with a population of 3.37 million. It has its own airport. The leading sectors are in biomedicine and new materials (metallurgy).

Xishuangbanna has a population of 990,000. Its leading sectors consist of biological medicine, healthcare products, consumer goods(furniture). It is China’s only tropical rain forest nature reserve. It is one of the main locations for rubber production.

Baoshan has a population of 2.43 million. There is one district, Longyang and 4 counties (Shidian, (Longling, Changning and Tengchong). The leading sectors in the food manufacturing (walnut), metallurgy, new materials, building materials, consumer goods (such as Jade jewellery).

Dehong is an autonomous prefecture with two cities (Ruili and Mangshi) and 3 counties. Leading sectors are food manufacturing, coffee, agriculture, automobile and motorcycle machinery

Lijiang is a prefecture city known for the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Leading sectors include metallurgy, new materials (clean energy), biomedicine and food manufacturing

Lincang is a prefecture city with a population of 2.32 billion, consisting of 1 district, 4 counties and 3 autonomous counties. The leading sectors consist of biological medicine, consumer goods manufacturing (forest products).

Diqing is known as Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture with a population of 354,000. It is the only passage from Yunnan to Tibet. The main tourist attractions are Shangri-La, Meili Snow Mountains and the preserved ancient town Old Diqing. The leading sector is Metallurgy.

Kunming is the provincial capital city with a population of over 6.26 million. It is a tourist attraction with lakes, pre-historic sites and villages of ethnic culture. It’s international airport is Changshui . Leading sectors are in biological medicine, new materials, information and advanced equipment manufacturing (CNC Machine tools and logistics equipment).

Yuxi is a prefecture city, with a population of over 2 million. The leading sectors include advanced equipment manufacturing and information

Geography and Demographics

  • Yunnan is located in South West China, sharing a border with Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam and is connected to Thailand and Cambodia by waterways.
  • Yunnan is the heart of Asia geographically
  • In China, it is the 6th largest province. It consists of 16 prefectures/cities with a population of 47 million (4.1% of the nation’s population). Kunming is the provincial capital city
  • The distance between Beijing and Yunnan is around 2 ½ half hours by plane and around 2 hours 20 minutes from Shanghai.
  • When it comes to the climate, in summer the temperate is cool and in winter it is mild. Temperatures are usually at an average of 22 degrees in June and July and from December to January around 9 degrees. May to October it usually rains. The weather makes the location great for the agriculture sector as it has a growing season of 10 months.
  • Previously, Yunnan was perceived as inaccessible and rural, without much connection to other regions of China and the rest of the world. Today it is accessible, with direct flights to Kunming from Laos, Malaysia, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand as well as from China’s big cities.
  • And historically famous for its plants, flowers, tobacco, coffee, walnuts, natural resources, minerals with reserves and its culture, Yunnan exports its goods to over 116 countries, with markets in neighbouring ASEAN countries and other parts of the world.

 

Economy

  • Over the years, the GDP per capita has been on the rise as shown in the graph below. In April 2015, the GDP was at a low 2% in 2015, in December 2017 it rose to 9.9%

Today, there are 22 universities spread across Yunnan, specialising in Teacher Training, Science and Technology, Business Management, Medicine, Agriculture and Forestry.  The majority of the universities are in Kunming, and one university in each of the other cities such as Pu’er, Dali, Wenshan, Yuxi, Zhaotong, Qujing, Mengzi and Chuxiong.

Culture and Customs

Amongst all the provinces in China, Yunnan has the largest number of the minority ethnic groups in China, with 25 out of 56 ethnic minority groups residing there; which equates to 28% of the population in the province. Although other ethnic dialects are spoken, the official language is Mandarin Chinese.

To protect their unique traditions, ethnic minorities maintain their dancing, singing, painting and music through the traditional festivals which are held in Yunnan. Tourists from other regions in China come to attend festival tours in the province.  As a well-known province for its tourist attraction and offering its visitors; festival tours, beautiful lakes, forestry, prehistoric cities, with both human and dinosaur fossil, an estimated 431 million people visited the province in 2015 of which 5.7 million were overseas tourists.

Yunnan has been known as the “Kingdom of Plants”, “Kingdom of Animals”, “Kingdom of Microorganism”, “Home of Medical Herbs, “Home of Spices” and “Biological Gene Pool”.

Tourism

Yunnan is the top tourist province in China receiving over 431 million domestic and overseas tourists in 2016.  It’s advantages are unparalleled natural scenery, ethnic culture and world heritage sites such as Lijiang. 

Yunnan has invested substantially in building the infrastructure for its tourism industry and it has the largest number of star grade hotels in western China. 

Yunnan has vowed to strengthen the building of its “Five Networks” infrastructure scheme. In the next five years, the province plans to spend 160 billion yuan on related projects, speeding up the development of road, water, aviation and energy networks, as well as online Internet capacity.

In the past year alone, 12 expressways were opened to traffic in Yunnan. Among the 82 projects listed in the provincial 13th Five-Year Plan” seven have been completed and opened to traffic. They span a total of 451 kilometres. Additionally, 13 railway projects—including the Yuxi-Mohan line connecting China with Laos, and the Dali-Ruili line linking China and Myanmar—are advancing across the board.

In terms of the province’s aviation network, passenger throughput handled by the Yunnan Airport Group increased from 31.92 million passengers in 2012 to 63 million passengers in 2017.   Additionally, the feeder airport aviation market has gradually become more mature and stable, laying a solid foundation for the overall development of Yunnan Airport Group.

To date, Yunnan has built a high-speed broadband network covering large areas with excellent service. More than 98 percent of the administrative villages in the province have access to fibre optic services, and the mobile 4G network covers all urban areas and administrative villages. Information services and applications continue to progress.

To promote Tourism, the 13th Five Year Plan seeks to develop:

Industrial clusters of precious metals have been preliminarily formed in as its centres:

Infrastructure in Yunnan

Embracing the development of the Infrastructure in; road, railway, aviation, waterway and internet networks, has positioned Yunnan to build a powerful infrastructure system encouraging development, therefore implementing the National Strategies.

Today there are 14 airports in service with flights to more than 400 destinations both in China and abroad. Kunming’s Changshui International Airport is the 3rd largest airport in China, with an estimated 37 million passengers each year.

Other airports in the province can be found in Dali, Zhaotong, Diqing, Baoshan, Pu’er, Lijiang, Wenshan, Tengchong, Xishuangbanna, Lincang and Dehong. By 2020 it is estimated there will be an increase of more than 50 general airports within the province.

The Belt and Road Initiative is a highway which will link Asia, Europe and Africa. Yunnan Province chose to join the initiative. As a result, Jiaotou, a Yunnan enterprise joined the initiative in 2017 and since has worked to transform the province from a remote border to China’s frontier open to South Asia and South East Asia markets.

The Xiaomengyang Mohan expressway, an express train between Kunming and Bangkok opened September 2017. This has created efficiency in travel to Bangkok and to have access to the market for the businesses in Yunnan.

Within the road network there are twenty trans-national highways and five international passages (China to Vietnam, China to Thailand via Laos and China to Myanmar). The rail network comprises of eight Trans-provincial and five trans-national railways (China to Vietnam, China to Laos, China to Myanmar, China to India via Myanmar and China to Thailand.)
